President of the World Federation of Medical Education visited the Secretariat of Working Committee for the Accreditation of Medical Education

At the invitation of Working Committee for the Accreditation of Medical Education, Professor David Gordon, president of the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME), visited the Secretariat of Working Committee for the Accreditation of Medical Education on July 6, 2018. Leaders of the Ministry of Education, leaders of the National Health and Health Committee, members of the Working Committee, members of the Secretariat, and domestic medical education experts gathered at the Peking University Health Science Center (the site of the Secretariat of the Working Committee), and held a meeting on the “the recognition of accreditation Organizations of medical education”.


At the beginning of the meeting, Professor Wang Weimin, deputy secretary-general of Working Committee for the Accreditation of Medical Education and vice principal of Peking University Health Science Center, introduced the background and missions of the National Medical Education Development Center and the importance of promoting the development of medical education in China to Professor David Gordon and the participants and awarded a special expert certificate to Professor David Gordon on behalf of the center. Professor Wang Weimin elaborated on the historical origin and development status of medical education in China, and summarized how China's accreditation of medical education system was established and its achievements from 2002 to 2017.


Professor David Gordon expressed his appreciation for the achievements of China's accreditation work for these years. He detailed WFME's institutional situation, international cooperation (including cooperation with ECFMG, FAIMER, IFMSA and WHO) and the purpose and status quo of the recognition programme. By introducing the experiences of recognition programmes in different countries, President David Gordon stated from both positive and negative aspects that countries should establish their accreditation system according to their own domestic conditions to achieve the goal of improving the quality of medical education.


The participating experts expressed their views on the current status and future development direction of China's accreditation of medical education. Professor Cheng Boji reviewed the history of China's accreditation of medical education. He pointed out that the accreditation of medical colleges based on medical education standards was not to rank medical colleges, but to continuously improve the quality of medical education. Professor Zhao Shibin from Harbin Medical University, Prof. Wen Liyang from Huazhong University of Science and Technology and Professor Ke Yang from Peking University also expressed their compliment of the development of China's accreditation of medical education in the past ten years, and reached a consensus that the committee should actively apply for the recognition by WFME.


Finally, Wang Qiming, deputy director of the Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education, Chen Wei, deputy director of the Department of Science and Education of the National Health and Health Committee, and Fan Wei, director of the Higher Education Evaluation Center of the Ministry of Education made a concluding speech on this meeting and the accreditation for medical education. They mentioned that the government would fully support the development of China's accreditation of medical education, and agreed that applying for the recognition by WFME will further promote the establishment of medical accreditation system with international equivalent effect and improve the quality of Chinese medical education.


After the meeting, Lin Huiqing, Vice Minister of Ministry of Education, met Professor David Gordon, discussed the work related to China's accreditation of medical education, and hoped to promote the recognition by WFME as soon as possible. Prosser David Gordon also expressed his full support.
