Background Information

ECFMG accreditation is an essential requirement for international medical graduates in the United States for Graduate Medical Education (GME) .

ECFMG has previously announced that, starting at the 2023, applicants for ECFMG accreditation must be students or graduates of accredited medical schools. More specifically, medical schools must be accredited by institutions accredited by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME). ECFMG 2023 accreditation can be downloaded from https://www.ecfmg.org/accreditation/ or http://wcame.bjmu.edu.cn/show.php?cid=56&id=385

At the same time, ECFMG recognizes that many countries have been forced to suspend or limit their accreditation efforts due to COVID-19 (Coronavirus). As such, ECFMG is moving the implementation of the requirement to 2024. ECFMG will announce an effective date as ECFMG approaches 2024; ECFMG will also continue to reassess this timeline as needed.

Further information regarding this change will be provided in the coming weeks on the website at www.ecfmg.org/accreditation.

To date, 21 accrediting agencies have received WFME recognition, with many others in process. ECFMG is energized by the commitment to quality improvement demonstrated in response to this initiative.

In October 2019, Working Committee for the Accreditation of Medical Education has completed WFME accreditation site visit, and will continue to optimize the construction of the accreditation system based on the feedback.
