From February 1st to 4th, 2017, Ke Yang, the executive deputy president of Peking University and vice chairman of the Working Committee of the Accreditation of Medical Education (WCAME) attended the Board Meeting of the Western Pacific Association of Medical Education (WPAME) as a Chinese representative at the invitation of Michael Field, the chairman of WPAME. Wang Weimin, the deputy director of Peking University Health Science Center (PKUHSC) and deputy secretary-general of the Secretariat of WCAME, and Liu Xiaomeng from Department of Education of PKUHSC attended the meeting as observers. This meeting was held in Manila, Philippines, with 29 representatives of 15 countries and regions in the Western Pacific region attending this meeting.
At the Board Meeting, the chairman Michael Field introduced the main work of WPAME in 2016. Representatives from the educational association of each country introduced the progress of the accreditation work of medical education in their countries. Ke Yang, the executive vice president of Peking University, reported the development of the accreditation of Chinese medical education and the accreditation work in the past year to the council. The accreditation work of Chinese medical education started in 202 and was led by Peking University Health Science Center. The accreditation work has developed steadily these years. By December 2016, WCAME had completed the revision of the second edition of Standards for Chinese Medical Education and the accreditation of medical education programs in 58 colleges and universities. The construction of Chinese accreditation system, the achievements of accreditation work, and the positive working attitudes and practical working styles of the working committee were unanimously recognized by the participants.
After the meeting, executive deputy president Ke Yang, accompanied by deputy director Wang Weimin, had a talk with Michael Field and Ducksun Ahn, the former vice chairman of World Federation of Medical Education and a professor at Korea University. Ke Yang and Wang Weimin expressed their gratitude to Professor Michael Field for his support and help on the accreditation of medical education in China, and asked him to convey the greetings from people working for the accreditation of medical education in China to Australian peers. Deputy director Wang Weimin specially invited Michael Field to provide guidance on the English version of the new edition of Standards for Chinese Basic Medical Education, and Michael Field accepted this invitation with pleasure.
On the next day, executive deputy president Ke Yang gave a keynote speech on the cultivation of medical professionalism. She used the medical education practice in Peking University as an example to introduce the interpretation of medical professionalism and practice of medical professionalism cultivation in China to the participants. Participants asked questions on the admission methods of Chinese medical students, holistic training of medical students and other matters. Through the communications, participants had a further understanding of the current situation of Chinese medical education and relevant measures. At the same time, communications gave us good inspirations on professionalism education for medical students.
The board meeting of WPAME provided opportunities for the external exchange and promotion of Chinese medical education, and expanded the influence of the accreditation of Chinese medical education on the Western Pacific region. In the meanwhile, this meeting provided new ideas for the future accreditation of Chinese medical education.
