Recently, Working Committee for the Accreditation of Medical Education(WCAME) has been formally certificated by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) . It indicates that the standards and accreditation system of medical education in China have achieved international substantial equivalence, and the quality of medical education accreditation has been recognized internationally.
The World Federation for Medical Education is an international non-governmental organization founded in 1972 by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Medical Association (WMA),to safeguard the quality of medical education worldwide, and play an important role in setting the global standard of medical education and promoting the reform of medical education. Only by passing through the certification of WFME, the accreditation conclusions by WCAME can be recognized worldwide, and the accredited medical school graduates can be accepted by the global health organization.
Since 2006, China has been carrying out the medical education accreditation. China has always insisted on establishing the accreditation system with Chinese characteristics and international effective equivalence, and invited experts from the United States, Australia, South Korea and Europe to participate in the practice in China. In 2008, WCAME was formally established. After more than 10 years of exploration and practice, WCAME has set up an accreditation system that is equivalent to the international practice, and organized and completed the accreditation of 105 medical schools (accounting for 76.3% of all medical schools).
In 2018, the working committee initiated the application of institutional accreditation and in October 2019 received a site visit from the WFME recognizaiton team. In June 2020, WFME announced that WCAME had obtained the“unconditional approval”. The recognition status from WFME formally confirmed that WFME was satisfied with the accreditation process, post accreditation monitoring and decision-making process of WCAME. The quality of Medical Education in its accredited schools by WCAME is to an appropriate and rigorous standard.
As of June 2020, institutions for accreditation of medical education that are recognized by the World Federation for Medical Education are located on five continents, including institutions from China, the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, the Russian Federation, The Netherlands, Mexico, Egypt, Brazil, Taiwan, and other countries or regions.
