2013 China Summit on Accreditation of Medical Education Successfully Held in Beijing

On October 25-26 2013, China Summit on Accreditation of Medical Education, jointly sponsored by the Department of Higher Education of Ministry of Education and the Working Committee for the Accreditation of Medical Education (WCAME) and organized by Peking University Health Science Center (PUHSC) was successfully held in the Vision Hotel in Beijing. Experts from Australia, South Korea, Mainland China and Macau, as well as over 190 representatives from nearly 80 medical schools attended the summit.

Xian Wang, deputy principal of PUHSC, delivered a welcoming remark on behalf of the school. After expressing warm welcome to all the representatives and appreciation to the Ministry of Education, she stressed that PUHSC would give the WCAME and the Secretariat full support in the future to better facilitate the accreditation of medical education in China.

Qiming Wang, Director of Agricultural and Medical Education Division, Department of Higher Education of Ministry of Education, delivered a significant speech. After a detailed analysis and interpretation of relevant policies and the future development direction of medical educational reform, director Wang pointed out that the accreditation of medical education was of great importance to the development of medical education. He emphasized the necessity of assessor workshops and the revision of accreditation guidelines to enhance the quality of assessors and the construction of accreditation system, and encouraged more medical schools to apply for international accreditation. In addition, director Wang highly appreciated the accreditation preparation and site visit of PUHSC, and encouraged PUHSC to take this opportunity for further development.

After the speech of director Wang, experienced experts at home and aboard gave keynote speech on the global practice of accreditation of medical education and accreditation practice in China from different perspectives, including Prof. Laurence Geffen, the former Chairman of the Accreditation Committee of the Australian Medical Council (AMC), Prof. Weimin Wang, Assistant Principal of PUHSC and Deputy Secretary-General of the WCAME, Prof. Ducksun Ahn, President of Association for Medical Education in the Western Pacific Region (AMEWPR), Prof. Jianrong Sun, Associate Vice President of Macau University of Science and Technology, Ms. Theanne Walters, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the AMC, Prof. Boji Cheng, Secretary-General of the WCAME, and Prof. Baozhi Sun, former Vice President of China Medical University. In the Q & A session, speakers also interacted with participants on questions they were interested in.

On October 26, a novel assessor workshop was held centered on “what makes a good self-evaluation report” and “what makes a good site visit”. In addition, accreditation assessors and representatives of PUHSC were also invited in the role-play session, to demonstrate the preliminary meeting and everyday team meeting during the site visit, which was well received. Prof. Boji Cheng and Prof. Michael Field, former chairman of the Accreditation Committee of the AMC chaired the workshop.

At the closing ceremony, Prof. Laurence Geffen shared some pictures he had taken with Prof. Boji Cheng in the past ten years, hereby highly valued the efforts and contribution of Prof. Cheng in promoting the accreditation of medical education in China, and expressed his wish for further cooperation between China and Australia.
